What ipe actually is
Ipe (say it "ee-pay") is a South American hardwood so dense it sinks in water — roughly 69 pounds per cubic foot — and it lands around 3,500 pounds-force on the Janka hardness scale. Red oak, the reference wood for domestic flooring, is 1,290. So ipe is close to three times harder than the wood in most people's living rooms.
That density is where every one of its properties comes from, good and bad:
- Good: naturally rot and termite resistant with no chemical treatment, dimensionally stable, holds up to furniture and dog claws, achieves a Class A flame spread rating without additives.
- Bad: it dulls carbide blades, it will not accept a screw without a pre-drilled and countersunk hole, and it stores heat.
The pre-drilling is not a suggestion. Drive a screw into ipe without it and you snap the screw, split the board, or both. Every single hole, and end grain gets sealed too, to slow the checking that dense hardwoods do at the ends. That is the labor line item that puts ipe at $55 to $80 a square foot installed rather than $35.
The clean way to do it is a hidden fastener system that engages a groove milled into the board's side, so there's no face fastening at all. Worth the upcharge here specifically because it eliminates hundreds of pre-drilled holes.
What composite actually is
Wood flour and plastic, extruded, and on any modern board wrapped in a polymer cap that does the real work of resisting stains, fading and moisture. It's genuinely good product now, and the 25-year residential warranties are not marketing fiction.
Its honest limitations:
- It cannot be refinished. Scratch the cap and you own that scratch. There's no sanding, no re-staining, no fixing. That's the exact trade you made for never having to oil it.
- It fades. Less than it used to, but UV is UV, and here it's relentless.
- It moves with temperature more than wood does, so end gaps come off the manufacturer's chart at the actual install temperature. Get that wrong on a 100-degree install day and boards buckle come January.
- Joist spacing is prescriptive: typically 16 inches on center for perpendicular boards and 12 inches for a 45-degree pattern. Ipe wants tight spacing too, but composite manufacturers tie warranty coverage to it.
The heat question, since this is the Rio Grande Valley
Neither one is a cool surface, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling.
Dark capped composite has been measured at 140 to 170°F on hot afternoons, and composite generally runs 10 to 35°F hotter than untreated wood in direct sun. Ipe is a natural wood, which should help — except that 69 pounds per cubic foot of density means it stores heat the way a cast iron pan does, so it heats slower and stays hot longer.
What actually moves the needle is color and shade, not material. In one same-brand test, light brown measured 93°F, medium brown 98°F, and dark brown 101°F under identical conditions. Ipe is inherently a dark board and you can't lighten it. Where each one genuinely wins
Buy ipe if:
- You want a real wood surface with grain that doesn't repeat.
- You want a deck that can be sanded and refreshed rather than replaced.
- The deck will take abuse — dogs, furniture on casters, a heavy grill dragged around.
- You want the longest-lived surface money buys and you're fine paying for the labor.
Buy composite if:
- You want to spend zero weekends on it, ever.
- You want lighter color options, which matter more here than they do in Ohio.
- The budget is the constraint. That $20-a-square-foot gap on a 400-square-foot deck is $8,000.
One more consideration people appreciate being told: ipe is a tropical hardwood. If sourcing matters to you, ask for FSC-certified stock and get the certification in writing on the invoice. It costs a little more. It's a reasonable thing to want.
The opinion: don't buy ipe unless you'll oil it
Ipe is worth every dollar if you will actually oil it every 1 to 2 years. If you won't, buy composite and put the $8,000 difference somewhere else.
Here's the reasoning. The two things ipe uniquely gives you are the rich brown color and the ability to refinish. Both require you to show up with a bucket of penetrating oil roughly every 18 months, at $150 to $400 in materials and most of a weekend. Skip it and ipe becomes an extremely expensive silver-gray deck that will outlive you — structurally magnificent, aesthetically the same result you'd have gotten from cedar you also ignored, for three times the price.
There's no shame in knowing you won't do the upkeep. Most people won't. That self-knowledge is worth $8,000, which is a better return than any decking on the market.
If you like the gray and you like real wood, then ipe with no maintenance plan is a legitimate, defensible choice — just make it on purpose.
When you shouldn't hire anybody, and when you absolutely should
The DIY line here is unusually clear. If you're building this yourself, do not choose ipe. It's the least forgiving decking on the market: pre-drill every hole, carbide blades you'll go through, boards heavy enough that you'll want a second person, and mistakes that cost $15 a board instead of $4. A pressure-treated or cedar deck is a genuinely satisfying DIY project. Ipe is a trade job.
And if your existing frame is sound and you're just chasing a nicer surface, remember you don't need a new deck at all — resurfacing runs about $12 to $22 per square foot versus $25 to $60 for new construction.
